A car alarm system shall prevent theft from a motor vehicles. The alarm system are activating the siren and the flashlights if one of the doors, bonnet or trunk is opened, or if the glass breakage sensor is trigged.

This is normally done by disconnecting vital electrical circuits to make the car immobilised. Since October 1998, cars sold inside the EU area must have an EU approved immobiliser installed.
